"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.
Disney's (DIS) original musical adventure "Encanto" won the Thanksgiving weekend domestic box office, with a Wednesday-Sunday opening of $40.3M. This was the best start of the pandemic era for an animated title, and that includes the $27M for the three-day weekend. Overseas, the movie earned $29.3M for a global total of $69.6M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Sony's (SONY) "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" placed number 2 with $32.3M, ending Sunday with an estimated 10-day domestic cume of $87.8M and $115.8M worldwide. Behind it was "Gucci" with a $21.8M five-day weekend debut. Disney's and Marvel's "Eternals" placed number 4 with another $11.4M from 3,165 locations. Rounding out the top five, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" grossed an estimated $8.8M in its debut weekend.
